About the area and the Hotels Near the White House
The White House is the legal and official residence and workplace of the president of the United States and is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue N.W in Washington, D.C. It has been the home of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800. The word “White House” is often used as a metonym for the president and their advisers.
Although rejected all proposals for the capital and selected an acceptable drawing for the white house submitted by James Hoban from several, including one also submitted anonymously by Jefferson.
Hoban was trained at the Dublin Society of arts and was born in Ireland. After the revolution, he emigrated to the U.S., first seeking work in Philadelphia and later finding success in South Carolina. He created several buildings, including the country capital at Columbia. Hoban ultimately managed the construction of both the U.S. Capitol and the White House.
The building was formerly variously referred to as the “President’s Palace,” or “Presidential Mansion,” or “President’s House.” The most direct evidence of the public calling it the “White House” was recorded in 1811. A myth developed that white paint was applied to mask the burn damage it suffered while rebuilding the structure after the Burning of Washington. Providing the building its namesake hue, “Executive Mansion” was used in formal contexts until President Theodore Roosevelt established the legal name by having “White House–Washington” inscribed on the stationery in 1901.
