About the area and the Hotels Near Pittsburgh Airport
Found about 10 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh, it is the principal international airport following the Greater Pittsburgh Region and adjacent cities in West Virginia and Ohio. The Allegheny County Airport Authority maintains and operates the airport and sees many flights to addresses throughout North America. PIT has four runways and covers 10,000 acres.
First inaugurated in 1952, five airlines originally served the airport and grew a small hub for Trans World Airlines for over two decades. The airport experienced a massive $1 billion rebuilding and development, completed in 1992, and became a primary hub for US Airway. The new airport was one of the most innovative in the world, called the “airport of the future” by the New York Times, and served to pioneer modern airport design with its X-shape to decrease the distance between gates, underground tram to transport tourists around the airport, and an array of purchasing options, all of which were cutting-edge at the time. Business peaked at 20 million passengers in the late 1990s. US Air rose to 542 flights and 11,995 workers in 2001, and the airport was an indispensable pillar of the Pittsburgh market. But the downturn in air travel shortly after September 11 attacks badly injured US Airways’ financial state. US Air declared chapter 11 bankruptcy twice in a row and dropped Pittsburgh as a hub in 2004, eliminating thousands of jobs and almost bankrupting the airport itself, mainly constructed to suit US Airways’ needs. However, US Air’s diminished capability at Pittsburgh opened the door for other airlines to increase services and better serve local Pittsburgh-area passengers preferably than focus on joining passengers.
PIT has a comprehensive, open design and four runways: three east-west lateral runways and a fourth crosswind runway. The airport’s two largest runways are 11,500 feet and 10,775 feet, allowing PIT to provide the largest airliners. Because of the growth of non-aviation-related trading on airport land, PIT can score only one and runway. With three identical runways, contemporary landings and departures can be implemented in nearly any location.
The airport complex consists of two principal buildings, the “Landside Terminal” and the “Airside Terminal.” The terminal consists of 75 gates on four roads; however, only 56 gates are available for use.
With more than eight million passengers yearly, Pittsburgh International Airport gets people to Pittsburgh and Pittsburghers where they need to go, giving more than 50 private and international destinations on 13 commercial vehicles and more than 170 daily flights. They’re in charge to reflect the re-emergence of our country as a player on a global stage, and people are seeing. Pittsburgh International’s works were recently recognized by:
- JD Power and Associates: Established PIT as one of the Top 10 Airports in North America
